 As a former labor relations attorney, working in a large law firm, I have generally been on the side of "management."  My primary issue with union contracts is not the level of salaries negotiated, but the work rules  that often cost far more than higher salaries.  A prime example is the union agreement that the MTA (Maryland Transit Administration) and its primary union.  The union was adamant about its entrenched work rules some of which prevented needed changes.
